scatterguard

The Scatterguard team have been employed in the plastics manufacturing business for many years. With experience in trouble shooting problems and developing solutions, their wealth of experience uniquely positioned them to develop enhanced solutions for everyday problems. One of those problems is the use of mold side curtains to increase manufacturing efficiency.

Over the last 10 years mold curtains have proved to be an invaluable tool for reducing lost parts that are ejected outside the drop zone. This has resulted in reduced scrap costs as well as increased machine efficiency. This is especially true where small part manufacturing is undertaken.

Introduced over 10 years ago the original mold curtains were solid, pleated material that offered no view of the molding area without stopping the press and removing the curtain. Since those early days development of the mold curtain has come a long way. Several models are available ranging from roller blind types which often require drilling and tapping the mold frame to mount them, to self rewinding models that mount to the mold simply by using magnets. All have their benefits and all have their drawbacks.

Possibly the least cost effective model is the roller blind type. It has parts that wear out especially the springs. Where the manufacturing environment is dirty this wear can be extensive resulting in constant part replacement. It can also present problems if the curtain is mounted slightly out of line causing the transparent curtain to shear resulting in curtain replacement cost and machine downtime.

The self rewinding models have the disadvantage of a visual obstruction down the center of the curtain which can sometimes require the machine to be stopped to check on the mold. A machine downtime cost.

Other disadvantages are that all models need to be assembled before they can be used. The difficulty of mounting the curtains when water and air lines present a real estate challenge. Possibly the biggest disadvantages of all the current models is if the mold opens wider than the curtain then the curtain is destroyed.

For 2 years the Scatterguard team have been working to design and develop a new type of curtain that overcomes these problems. It is called Scatterguard.
